Is there anything that doesn’t go with denim? Is there anything that doesn’t go with diamonds? Ok then, let’s discuss.
I venture to say that three essential items in everyone’s wardrobe are a men’s style button front shirt, something denim, and something that sparkles. Your denim item could be jeans, a skirt, a jacket or shorts. Sparkle comes in many forms as well, whether it’s earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, or piercings, as long as there is a twinkle - subtle or not. As for the shirt, you need a great forever button front boyfriend style shirt OR you can feed two birds with one scone and get a shirt with sparkly buttons (wink wink!).
And then there is Beyoncé, a brave soul who can go all out and sport denim on denim & diamonds on diamonds as Cowboy Carter.
Here are four different approaches to this fun combo:
Sparkle on your jeans
My love of over the top jeans started with the Gucci show (Tom Ford era) in Spring 1999. Shimmering jeans are best with just a white t-shirt and sneaks or heels. Don't forget, versatility makes for a more sustainable wardrobe!
DIY your sparkle
Time to get out your glue guns and gather some crystal flat back beads and reach into your jeans drawer for a neglected pair. Plan your placement or just improvise. I guarantee you’ll get compliments (or at least some comments) and have the chance to say, “Thanks, I made them!”
Sparkle on your shoes
Imagine: you’ve constructed a great classic outfit of your men’s shirt and a denim bottom (maybe a skirt or a wide leg jean), but when you look in the mirror, something is… missing. Enter the sparkly shoe! Sparkle just works with everything.
And of course, my favorite...
A sparkly shirt from A Shirt Story with your favorite jeans
Seriously! I think it looks so good that I wrote a whole newsletter about it. Here’s some inspo for how to match your shoes and jeans – just pair any of these combos with a shirt with sparkle and you’ll be the best dressed person in any room! (Okay, many rooms.)
On a more serious note, the fashion industry is the third largest polluter globally and denim is one of the biggest offenders - often wasting water and releasing greenhouse gasses and toxins through all stages of production. Whenever you are purchasing denim, it’s important to find brands that actually walk the walk (implementing sustainable best practices) not just talk the talk (greenwashing etc). That includes avoiding carbon emissions, saving water and rescuing jeans from landfills. Two brands making huge efforts are MUD and Nudie included above. Check out goodonyou for their ratings and recommendations!
Now, back to fun vibes, I thought I would close with a photo of another brilliant musical icon who loved a little razzle dazzle, Elvis Presley.
Don’t forget to find a little sparkle whenever you can.
